How do I protect my family if someone is injured by a driver without enough insurance?

There are a lot of bad drivers out there. And it probably comes as no surprise that many of them have little or no insurance.

So how do you protect yourself and your family from serious injuries caused by these drivers? You need to make sure that you have enough "Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist" coverage - or "UM -coverage". This will protect you, and any family members living with you.

The good news is, if you have car insurance in Connecticut, you already have this coverage. The bad news is, you may not have enough.

When we buy car insurance, most agents do not explain uninsured/underinsured coverage. Usually, they just give you the same limits you have for your liability coverage. But did you know that, for a small amount of money, you can increase your UM coverage to double the amount of your liability limits?

For a little bit extra, you can also buy something called conversion coverage. This gives your family additional protection, if one of you is injured by an underinsured driver. It is important to make sure that your insurance agent explains the benefits and the extra cost of conversion coverage to you. BUT YOU NEED TO ASK.

Here are some important tips to follow when buying car insurance.

  • Make sure you ask about uninsured motorist coverage and what your limits are.
  • Find out what it will cost to double your limits.
  • Ask your agent to explain conversion coverage and what it will cost.
  • Do not agree to sign a waiver to reduce your uninsured motorist coverage below your liability limits.
