Keeping Connecticut Drivers Safe for the Holidays and Beyond

(December 2011) Connecticut state troopers recently launched a holiday-themed initiative to cut down on the amount of accidents seen on the roadways. The aptly named Operation S.A.N.T.A. (Stop Another Needless Traffic Accident) focuses on educating the public about all manner of violations that cause accidents, including:

  • Speeding
  • Tailgating/following too closely
  • Unsafe lane changes
  • Driving under the influence (DUI)
  • Running stop signs or red lights
  • All types of distracted driving, including a wide range of distracting activities engaged in behind the wheel, everything from eating to talking on a cell phone to grooming and sending text messages

While the timing of Operation S.A.N.T.A. obviously coincides with the Christmas and New Years’ holiday seasons, the Connecticut State Police and Connecticut Emergency Department Physicians want the lessons taught by it to continue through 2011. They stress that the use of seat belts, not driving while intoxicated and paying attention to the road ahead can prevent many accident-related injuries and can even lower the risk of being killed in an accident.

The messages of Operation S.A.N.T.A. are especially useful for young drivers. They are often involved in accidents due to their inexperience behind the wheel, and observing safe driving practices (wearing seat belts, not speeding, properly signaling turns/lane changes and complying with traffic control devices like stop signs and red lights) will greatly decrease their chances of being injured in a car crash.

In spite of the best efforts of state and local police forces, distracted driving accidents will likely continue to rise. If you have been injured in a distracted driving-related accident, seek the counsel of an experienced Connecticut personal injury attorney in your area to learn more about your legal rights and options.
