Cephalopelvic disproportion can typically be detected through ultrasounds by gauging girth of the baby’s head and shoulders. When CPD is detected, doctor’s should be able to avoid birth injury by delivering the baby by C-section.
When CPD is not detected, the labor can be prolonged considerably. As the doctor struggles to deliver the large baby through the mother’s pelvis, the baby can suffer brain damage due to lack of oxygen, shoulder dystocia and other birth injuries. The mother is also at risk of pelvic injury and other life-threatening injuries.
