There are a number of reasons why family members decide to place a mother, father, grandmother, grandfather, husband, or wife in a nursing home facility. One reason is the risk of falling when the person is no longer able to safely transfer himself or herself from bed to chair, from chair to standing position or from one place to another on his or her own.
Family members may not be available to provide 24-hour assistance. The vulnerable person may not cooperate well with family members. He or she may be too heavy for family caregivers to safely handle.
If a fall has occurred in a nursing home, a careful examination of the facts may reveal that basic safety mechanisms were not followed by staff, such as:
- Lack of bed rails or failure to secure bed rails
- Failure to provide adequate staff to transfer a person from bed to chair or from chair to bath
- Failure to provide needed assistance in the bathroom
